Many of our nation’s schools are finally getting ahead of the educational technology curve, says a recent study by the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN). But many are still behind it.

For example, more than half of districts meet the Federal Communication Commission’s short-term broadband connectivity goal of 100 Mbps for every 1,000 students, but 56 percent don’t meet the long-term goal of 1 Gbps per 1,000 students.

Nearly 60 percent of districts say they are “very confident” that their wireless networks can handle one device per student, but 30 percent have one or more days of network downtime every year.

The key to creating a strong school technology environment is having a strong technology team. But because they’re resourceful and watching their budgets, many schools will rely too heavily on part-time tech staff that often includes tech-savvy but busy classroom teachers. It’s time to change your game.

Educational technology is much more sophisticated than it used to be, and maintaining it requires a higher level of skill and experience. Specialized IT service providers can help you evaluate your school’s technology needs and determine which industry-leading technology professionals—from network administrators to classroom technology coaches—can help you achieve your school’s technology vision.
